HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of meeting held on August 5, 2009

Meeting opened at 10:18 a.m. by Chairman Bruce Plumley.

PRESENT: COA members:  Tom Baltazar, Harold Hewinson, Lowell Nixon, Bruce Plumley, Jack Reed and Susan Sanders.  Others: Senior Center Director: Margaret Crock, Manager: Don Sanders, Outreach Worker Deb Tierney, Activities Coordinator: Linda Artruc, and Judy Gaumond from Friends of Holland Seniors.

ABSENT:  Earl Johnson and Olive Nixon.
MINUTES:  Motion to accept meeting minutes of July 1, 2009, was seconded and approved.  

REPORTS:  Debbie Tierney, Outreach Worker – Deb presented a written report listing events this past month, i.e. a presentation of ID theft by Country Bank who also donated two shredders – one for Senior Center use and one to be raffled which was won by Brad Noble.  There was also a field trip to Orchard Valley Assisted Living in Wilbraham.  GSSSI: Farmers’ Market coupons are being distributed to income eligible seniors.  GSSSI Executive Director Laurie Cassidy’s son died in a drowning accident on July 25th.  Local resident Jackie Anger now works for GSSSI as a Senior Companion Driver and she can serve Holland seniors who qualify.  Call for specifics.  Our newsletter goes out at the end of August.  Submission deadline for inclusion of events etc. is August 21st.  About 260 stamps will be needed, as well as 20 more 44s and about 20 17s for items with additional weight.  Supplies needed by this office include mailing labels, business envelopes, mailing seals, White Out, and pens.  Motion made and approved to purchase supplies.  The best deal will be obtained.  Deb will be on vacation from August 27 – 31.

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.
In July 804 contacts were made and 103 seniors were served.  278 attended the Senior Center, 112 attended congregate meals, and the balance includes cards & games (105), exercise (32), senior tax work off program (13), intergenerational activity (130), phone calls (90), computers (15), COA meeting (8), garden club meeting (16), stained glass classes (14), blood pressure clinic (19), speakers (25), entertainment programs (8), meetings and activities  (9), crafts (19).  

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock and Harold Hewinson.
As of July 31, 2009 only the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of  $623.00.  

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:  Regular programs:  Lunch is served every Monday as well as on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.  Monday Mah Jong at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. 2nd Monday (8/10) Garden Club at 10:30 a.m.; Tuesday Stained glass classes at 10:30 a.m. followed at 1:00 p.m. by a craft class; Wednesday 10:00 a.m. exercise class, and COA meeting on the 1st Wednesday; Thursday 12:30-3:00 p.m. cribbage, and crafts from 1:00-3:00 p.m. with Linda Artruc.  Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily.  

August events:  On August 10th blood pressure and garden club.  On August 12th birthday lunch.  On August 17th at 1:00 p.m. “Mark Twain” visits us.  On August 24th Bay State Medical Center will give a health presentation.  On August 26th “Name that baby (or someone)” picture ID game after lunch.

September events:  September 2nd COA meeting 10:15 a.m., September 16th Stageloft Theatre trip.  September 19th blood pressure screening/cold and flu information.  September 30th English Tea Party at 1:00 p.m.  October events:  October 6th from 10:00 to 12:00 (tentative date) we will have a flu shot clinic.  October 7th Opacum Trust presentation from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. on The Lost Valley of East Brimfield.  Future use of the Senior Center includes two events approved at today’s meeting.

FINANCIAL:  Susan Sanders, Treasurer  
Final report for end of fiscal year: Receipts in June: GSSSI $583.33 and gifts totaling $125.00.  Expenditures in June were:  Salaries $2098.40, office supplies $48.58, telephone $125.02, trash pickup $31.50, electric $134.03, stamps $105.60, Eva Pittsinger $60.00, Osterman propane $322.57, petty cash $48.97, senior companion mileage reimbursement $593.63, Deb Tierney-mileage and parking $20.35, lawn care $141.75, entertainer Richard Clark $200.00, and donation in memory of Kathryn Brown $100.00, newsletter $36.34, and lumber for picnic tables $154.12.  Excess funds returned to the Town: $113.62.  

July report includes: Amounts approved at Town Meeting – Coordinator salary $4,597.00, COA expense $4,744.00 and Senior Center expenses and maintenance $13,909.00.  Receipts for July include GSSSI $583.33 and gift totaling $100.00.  Expenditures: Allied Waste $31.50, Citizens Security $75.00, telephone $60.76, lawn care $110.25, and salaries $1,238.75.  

MANAGER: Don Sanders – Don to take care of weed removal around air conditioner units and carpet cleaning in the front entry.  Use of the basement by the Garden Club to start plants for next year will be explored.  Possibility of a grant application for a greenhouse for plants.  Don suggests every other year cleaning schedule for heating/air conditioning plant, provided they are well maintained.  

Motion to accept all of the above verbal and printed reports was made and approved by the Council on Aging.

OLD BUSINESS – Tom has the materials and will building two picnic tables for use at the Center.  There may also be some at the Town Garage that could be repaired as well as two at the shed at Holland Church.  Stained glass supplies and equipment totaling $231.22 have been purchased through the generosity of Friends of Holland Seniors ($200.) and $42.00 in donations and bottle/can redemption.

NEW BUSINESS – Harvest Festival tentatively scheduled for October 17th and will be similar to last year’s event.  This is a combined effort of Holland Church, Friends of Holland Seniors and the PTO.  Judy Gaumond is the new Secretary of the Friends and they will meet on August 12th at 9:00 a.m. at the Center.  New members are being sought.  The Garden Club has been growing tea for use at the Tea Party.  Discussion was held regarding notification when there is a death of anyone in town, especially our seniors.  Suggestions were made and we will continue to think about the best way to respond.  Sadly, our former Chairman Frank Antonovich passed away in July and many were unaware of his passing until the day of his funeral.  GSSSI grant approval was received for Deb Tierney’s position as Outreach Worker.
